gabriel is born to collete carvon, a runaway heiress. when she passes shortly after childbirth, he is taken in by his grandparents ian and eloise carvon. they raise him strictly, and keep him well away from his biological father, Pietyr avdimi, and his so-called cult.Still, in his teenage years, gabriel is convinced to 'give them a chance,' during which is impossible perceptive abilities appear to come from a well-considered blood-magic match, rather than simple skill. dissatisfied, gabriel hauls ass back home, to complete his bachelors' and doctorate. he has minors in archeology and anthropology, and a very calm demeanor.eventually, word spreads with the more dubious of ian's contacts, and he makes a name for himself as a very expensive, very private, source of reprieve for those struggling. with a strong stomach for bloodshed and death, gabriel is well-regarded even during the worst of occasions. on-site visits cost extra.in his spare time, he holds a fondness for children. his foster sister, natalie, is no longer young but still held dear by the family. he holds a deep interest in art collection, though alongside his mother's leftover paintings, he himself prefers physical artefacts, contemporary or ancient.he will eventually marry elaina acosta, and have one daughter, cerise, and one son, glorian. born to a starry-eyed disciple of a fresh young cult, headed by a thing that has taken form in the body of a man that was once a simple parrish. the entity calls itself pietyr, for ease, but is something beyond. a force of nature that has decided to take something of its own.gabriel, half-human, grows and bleeds as a normal child. there is something too perceptive to him --- a child that sees you as you truly are. it is not until pietyr kidnaps him at the moment of puberty that his baser nature is revealed: he is hungry, always, because he is a predator fed scraps. avdimi devours his willing disciples from their flesh, aiming for the heart and soul. though hungry, the flesh forced upon him does not sate; only aches. his body rejects it. when an engraged avdimi, finding the vessel he had planned for himself is too weak for the job, strikes him to kill, gabriel runs. the frozen lake is too warm. but if the options are his father or the ice, gabriel will jam his heel into the thin floor, vanishing beyond the frigid waters. those after him would only wait so long for him to resurface. the boy is dead, so it is of no matter.but his body is more resilient than it seems. washed ashore in spring, the decay heals itself over slowly --- one eye given over to carrion, one foot left bloated, trapped underneath rock. it leaves the boy wooden, half-blind, a shambling thing attempting to find home.he finds a home. a funeral home, at the edge of town. the owner, a shaman more witch than human, more organ donor than caretaker, settles him on her metal table. she spends a long time cutting away decay to reveal clean flesh. She spends a week plucking maggots out of the hole in his eye. when he thinks of her as something close to a mother, she allows him her blood. metal to mouth, a relief instead of nausea. freshness allows his body to remake limbs lost, allows too-sharp teeth and too-many joints to settle into place. He is taller, after. older. she asks him if he'd like to stay that way, or if he wants to make his limbs shorter, contort his body into skin too tight.he's spent his whole life as a human. to forgo that is to forgo family. still a strange collection of limbs and too-long arms, he trudges home with fresh clothes and apologies. Eloise will always invite him into her hearth.to make do, he finds his own way. blood or flesh is not crucial to survival: only to heal, only when needed. when a stray bullet fired by a best friend tears off his ear, he finds true connection is necessary, and only the blood of someone dear can cure.
