born to a single mother, who split town a month after his birth, kenneth was raised by extremely religious grandparents. phoebe's nonpresence was a stain on the household, but frank & marissa shaymond nonetheless kept him until the age of 12, wherein his grandfather died and his grandmother, who had suspected him of being devil-born ever since his first ominous words at age 3, ousted him from the home, blaming him for the dirt of frank's coffin filling in his empty grave before they could lower him into it .[ VERSE 01A ] kenneth was subsequently adopted a few towns over by another elderly couple, Dane & harmony Cobbold, who were far more accepting of his gender identity & psychic inclination ー he is currently commonly found as the main cashier/worker at DANE’S ANTIQUES, a dark and dusty vintage shop holding several items suspected to be haunted. within the basement lie several holy books, essays on demonic behavior, and all 12 editions of EXORCISMS FOR DUMMIES by lisa cobbold, who kenneth has not yet met. kenneth shares the space with the ghoulish facade of a young victorian girl, who frequents the chair next to the stack of magazines at the counter. those of supernatural propensity will be able to see her, and she will be able to see them; despite her lack of eyeballs. she is harmless, and mostly accompanies kenneth on slow days .kenneth plans to soon move to a major city, though he’s currently undecided – he’s busy being a mechanic as soon as he's out of high-school, a job he vastly prefers to being bored alone at dane's place . it’s a great place to MEET PEOPLE, too, in that single gas station/mech shop after a long stretch of desert road, prone to an influx of irritated travelers wheeling their dead cars in. many people suspect there is a SUPERNATURAL FIELD around the town, leading to the great number of vehicular casualties. whenever any suspiciously blood-rain adjacent events occur, though, everyone looks to kenneth, for reasons HE DOES NOT YET KNOW .[ VERSE 02 ] one sunny day, kenneth’s biological father finally reveals himself. a gaunt, terrifying man, he’s a herald for old gods of death. he has a significant following, including the very town kenneth calls home, including the man kenneth considers his father. dane is kind when he tells kenneth their bond won’t change, but he's not very convincing. there's a clear othering present, an arms-length between him and people he's known & loved his whole life. the good Father Avdemi, and whatever amalgamation of doom is tight around his shoulders like a beloved pet, expects kenneth to use his charm to speak for their inevitable apocalypse. to speak aloud the omens he has been dreaming of since birth, to lessen the burden on his young shoulders. as much as he loathes the sickening fortitude everyone has in the blood of avdemi, he is too afraid to begin to run from it. he is the town’s precious mouthpiece, less devoted than avdemi’s other children, BUT FAR MORE TALENTED.this job saps the joy from kenneth. left a shell of a man, celibate, miserable, and controlled. divnity as a prison. all he desires is to run, but where can he go? his father sends him to sweet-talk mayors, to nudge bishops, to SPREAD THE WORD. they hunt to wake sleepers -buried nobles and warriors and travelling salesmen- who must be awoken to bring about the second shattering, a resurgence of magic so powerful that it will break apart the world of now. the prophecies have spoken, every nightmare points to it: when the ley rises again, the balance will be restored.[ VERSE 03 ] before his third solstice with his father’s people, he runs. city to city and town to town, he finds himself dodging the wrong people at every turn, offering services to 'banish' demons, though whether he's actually doing it is... up for debate. / more info tba.supplementary NOTE OF RELEVANT NPCS/world HERE✰ +KEY TERMS ✰

a very time-versatile modernish setting.✰ the shattering: a time several thousand years ago where the magic began to seep from this world into something else, a leak that lead to magical creatures becoming weaker, that lead to certain species of mage losing natural predators, becoming unchecked and overconsuming.✰ the second shattering: an event not dissimilar to the conjunction of spheres from the witcher series, wherein the cracks will be sealed, the quiet trickle of the leylines transformed into a thundering roar. this will have consequences on radio waves, the magnetic field, and the majority of humans who live above sleeping beasts.✰ the sleepers: people of honor fixed in a state of deathlike sleep, effectively immortal until awoken. only the twelfth house and its sects are able to perform the rituals needed to ensure a successful slumber.✰ the twelfth house: the cult of avdemi. remains of a religion that died long before the shattering. countless different divisions and sects exist of the twelfth, but the battle to keep the name is a difficult one. they are constantly at odds with each other.
